About - About New York

Okay, so this entry is going to exclude the Big Apple since I’ve got a whole ‘nother thing on that one that’s much more specific to the city. This is going to be an overview of the state of New York in general, because, quite contrary to what many New York City metrophiles believe, there is a lot of great stuff to do and see in the rest of the state. From the Catskills to the vineyards, to the rolling estates and battlefields all up and down the unexpectedly HUGE Hudson River, there’s so much to do in the rest of the state that it’s as hard to pin down as the city that made the state famous.

New York State is home to the Catskill Mountains, which have long been the vacation retreat of those from NYC, and for good reason. It’s the epitome of the great outdoors, with all the camping, hiking, BBQing, boating and fishing you can handle, and then some. It’s also a got one of my favorite little known (outside of New york, anyway) hikes ending in a waterfall. The Kaaterskill Falls is hidden up a sunny hillside trail, past a slow winding stream. And if you want to get up close, you can – but be careful, one of the trails goes right up to the 94 degree vertical inward drop. But the view is grand and truly transportive. You might feel like you’re anywhere, looking out from atop the cliffs, but you sure won’t feel like you’re anywhere civilized. It’s truly awesome.

Rather than cover New York State’s history as I normally would, let me pitch you this travel concept – hit New York, but do a full on historical trip. Here’s my suggestion: do the Hudson Valley’s Great Estates Tour… you’ll get  a full trip through 300 years of American History up and down the Hudson River. And it includes Revolutionary war sites, the huge mansions and palaces of literary greats and industrial moguls. A trip up the Hudson would ggive you the original location of Washinton Irving’s Sleepy Hollow, the Lyndhurst Estate, the Rockerfeller Families place (one of many), and the famous Vanderbilt Mansion. Yes, these guys built their fortunes on the backs of the poor, but despite my dislike of the elite, I have to admit the homes and estates are astounding. In any regard, this historical themed trip will inform you on the fundamental on which our country was founded… money.
